To keep your WordPress site running smoothly—both on the front end and in the admin area—it’s important to make sure your server meets the minimum recommended settings. Issues like low memory limits, small upload file sizes, or short execution times often arise because your site doesn’t have enough server resources.

PHP configurations

If you happen to be troubleshooting, it’s important to verify that your server meets or surpasses the minimum requirements. If you’re running a larger website, you might need to increase these values to handle the additional load effectively.

Checking Your Server Settings

A simple way to review your current server settings is by using the WordPress Site Health tool. You can find it by going to Tools > Site Health, then selecting the Info tab. This section provides detailed information across various areas of your site’s configuration.

In the Server Section, you’ll find settings such as:

  • PHP max input variables (Max Input Vars)
  • PHP time limit (Max Execution Time)
  • PHP memory limit
  • Upload max filesize (Max Upload Size)
  • PHP post max size (Max Post Size)

In the WordPress Constants Section, you’ll find settings such as:

How to Increase PHP Limits

Sometimes WordPress themes or plugins need more resources than your server allows by default. Here’s how you can increase the most common PHP limits to keep everything running smoothly.

If you’re unfamiliar with changing PHP limits, then we highly recommend you contact your host. If you’re a pro, you can adjust these values yourself depending on your server setup. Here’s a breakdown:

1. Contact Your Host (Safest & Easiest):

  • If you’re unsure or using shared hosting, your hosting provider can usually make these changes for you.

2. Edit PHP.ini (Most Direct Method, if accessible):

  • Look for or create a php.ini file in your root directory and add or modify the values:

NOTE: Every hosting provider is different — some allow access to key server files, while others restrict them. Even if you’re experienced with PHP configurations, you may still need to contact your host to apply these changes on your behalf.

3. 🚫Not Recommended:

  • Changing values through plugin settings unless you know the plugin is built for that.
  • Random file edits without knowing your server type (Apache, Nginx, etc.).
