What Are WordPress Plugins (and Why Do You Need Them?)

If you’re new to WordPress, you might be wondering what a plugin even is. Think of plugins as little apps that add extra features to your website.

  • Want better security? There’s a plugin for that.
  • Need a contact form? Yep, there’s one for that too.

Plugins are what make WordPress so powerful—you can start with a simple site and then add exactly what you need as you grow. But here’s the important bit: more doesn’t always mean better. Installing too many plugins can slow down your website and even cause conflicts between them.

That’s why we’ve put together this guide on the importance of essential WordPress plugins. These are the ones that almost every beginner should install to keep their site safe, fast, and easy to use. By focusing only on the essentials, you’ll avoid overwhelm and build a strong, reliable foundation for your new website.

Must-Have WordPress Plugins for Beginners

Now that you know what plugins are and why they matter, let’s talk about the ones you actually need. These are the essential WordPress plugins that we use and will give your website a strong foundation without overwhelming you with too many choices. We’ve broken them into simple categories so you can see exactly what each one does and why it’s important.

Security & Protection

Your website is like your home—you lock the doors when you leave, right? The same goes for your site. A good security plugin protects you from hackers, malware, and spam before they even reach your dashboard.

  • Malware Scanner – Easy to set up, gives you firewall protection, malware scanning and instant malware cleaner, and best of all it keeps your site secure without slowing it down. We use this on all our websites, there’s little to no set up and all websites can be viewed from Malcare central hub, websites are constantly monitored, and if there’s ever an issue Malcare will notify you via email.
  • Prior to Malcare and testing others, we used WordFence, which we strongly suggest you don’t use because it uses a lot of resources on your website and server and isn’t easy to set it.
  • Use a security plugin like Solid Security to monitor login attempts, set lockout limits, and add Two-Factor Authentication. This gives you an extra layer of protection without extra hassle.

Backups (So You Never Lose Your Site)

Mistakes happen. Sometimes it’s a broken update, sometimes it’s human error—but either way, having a backup is like having insurance for your website.

  • WP Staging Pro – A beginner-friendly, set-it-and-forget-it backup solution. You can connect it to Google Drive or other and rest easy knowing your site is safe. It’s superfast backup duplicator, staging, and migration. The free version can be downloaded from your WordPress Repository. This plugin isn’t needed if you use ScalaHosting.

Speed & Performance

No one likes a slow website—least of all your visitors. Search engines also rank fast sites higher, so performance matters from day one.

  • Litespeed Cache – If your hosting company uses Litespeed, then this caching plugin is the best you’ll find, it also has a free image optimizer, and other great freebies. It’s free and can be downloaded from your repository. After testing many others, we eventually settled on Litespeed and use it on all our websites. It is, as said—lightening fast!

  • FlyingPress is much more than a caching plugin, it is a caching winner, is a complete performance optimization tool and is a must for a superfast website. We suggest using this plugin if your server doesn’t use Litespeed.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Even the best website won’t go far if no one can find it. An SEO plugin helps you write content that’s optimized for search engines (without needing to be an expert).

  • Rank Math SEO – A fantastic, beginner-friendly option that walks you through setup step by step. We use it on all our websites and is our preferred choice for SEO – the paid version is also worth considering.

Contact Forms

Every website needs a way for visitors to get in touch. A contact form plugin makes it easy, even if you’re not technical. Here are two choices:

  • If you’re using Kadence, we suggest to use their inbuilt forms. Depending on the complexity of your needs you may need WP Forms or SureForms.
  • SureForms – Is a modern, lightweight option if you want something built for speed. We use SureForms Pro because it offers more distinct design options, and it offers other features that can’t be found in other form plugins.
  • WPforms – Their free version can be found in the WordPress repository, is perfect for general forms, offers drag-and-drop, and is quick to set up. Their paid version is worth considering due to the huge selection. Be prepared to install an SMTP Plugin with WPForms.

Spam Protection

Spam comments and form submissions are not only annoying—they can make your site look unprofessional.

  • Antispam Bee – Can be found in the WordPress repository, and it does a great job of filtering out spam before you even see it. We have used this since it’s inception and have always had great results—no spam.

Ecommerce / Payments (Optional but Popular)

Not every beginner will need this right away, but if you’re thinking about selling products or digital downloads, an ecommerce plugin is essential.

  • Sure Cart – A modern, streamlined checkout option that’s super easy to set up. It’s our preferred ecommerce choice, it’s free and offers many free extras that you’d need to pay for if you were to use WooCommerce.
  • WooCommerce – The most popular ecommerce plugin for WordPress, with tons of flexibility if you need advanced features. However, the downside to this plugin is that it uses a lot of space on your server, you will need many paid and pricey plugins which can cause conflicts, and slow your website down.

Every website needs a cookie notice.

  • Lightweight Cookie Notice – the free version is suffice for most websites and is downloadable in your WordPress repository.

Image Optimization

Large images can slow down your site, but the right plugin will compress them without losing quality.

  • WP Smush or ShortPixel Image Optimizer – Powerful plugins that automatically optimizes images as you upload them. If you’re using Litespeed Cache it has an inbuilt image optimizer so you will not need an extra image optimizer.

Code Snippets

As your site grows, you will want to make changes and if possible without installing more plugins. Codes sound complex, but this plugin offers many code snippets and support to help you get started. We also have code snippets in our knowledge base, check them out.

  • WPCode Lite – more flexible than others, no need to upgrade to pro unless you’re a developer, and they offer many free snippets.

Analytics

It’s important to know how people are finding and using your website. An analytics plugin connects you to Google Analytics without the tech overwhelm.

  • Site Kit by Google – Free, official, and gives you simple insights right inside your WordPress dashboard, makes installing Google Analytics a breeze. Not needed if you use RankMath because they use their own analytics. Is downloadable in your WordPress repository.

Knowledge Base

Not every website will need a knowledge base system.

  • EazyDocs – the easiest, most powerful knowledge base, it’s our go to, is a complete solution for creating a help desk, support center, FAQ, wiki, and more.

✨ Think of these as your “nice-to-have” plugins. They’re not essential when you’re just starting out, but they’ll become valuable additions as your site grows and you want more control over sharing, performance, and insights.
